Student led National Indigenous Peoples Day

One of our inquiry grants this year had teachers working on incorporating the First Peoples Principles of Learning into their classrooms. After exploring the Coast Salish Elements found in Musqueam, Snaw'naw'as and Lyackson decendant Melaney Gleeson-Lyall’s (Point) artwork and a variety of Indigenous games, students in Division 9 decided they wanted to plan and run a week of activities for National Indigenous Peoples Day. Over the course of the week, all classes have spent time outside in a variety of activities led by this group of Grade 4 and 5 students. Teachers observed that all students were able to find an entry point and spending time outside helped many students to engage in an authentic way.
