A Good Place To Start

School Focus: At Dixon, we are embarking on creating and improving positive relationships between each other.

What targeted actions are being taken?

What gap or problem does this action aim to address? Why was this particular action chosen?

Based on quantitative and qualitative data, how effectively has this action addressed the identified gap or problem?

How will we move forward accordingly? What are our next steps?

Ensuring that all members of our school community are familiar with the Richmond Code of Conduct.

If we are going to move our community forward, we need to ensure that all members are aware of the expectations for “How We Learn and Work Together”

If we are planning to make a change with our students, especially regarding their behaviour, we need to make sure that we have our parent community informed and onboard.

We started by reviewing the Richmond Code of Conduct with all our students and sent a photocopied document home for students to review with their parents, parents signed and returned to the school.

Based on our initial student data, approximately 25% of Dixon students had seen the Code of Conduct and approximately 14% had read it.  We also know that approximately 30% of staff were referring to the Code of Conduct when speaking with students about their interactions with others.

We now know that approximately 95% of our students have read and reviewed the Richmond Code of Conduct.

We have also layered on some additional expectations for students, by putting some additional structures in place (hallway behaviour, lunch hour behaviour) and have taken the time to review all of these with all our classes.  Posters are up in all classes to serve as reminders and for teachers and students to reference.

We have also seen a marked improvement in the way that students are treating each other, as less students and parents are visiting the office with concerns.

Next Steps – to ensure that staff are referring to this document regularly to remind students of the expectations regarding the way we interact with each other.

We are working as a staff to bring back Family Teams activities to build stronger connections between our students, (K-7) to practice some of the skills required for positive interactions and to do some activities promoting empathy, positive relationships, being a friend, etc.  These will take place during second and third term.  Our SEL team has met to plan these activities for staff.
