We Asked The Kids - Reading Survey

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?	We conducted an anonymous survey with students Grades 3 – 7, to gather some information from our students regarding their thoughts on their reading.
What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen?	We felt it was important to gather some information from students to help us narrow our focus, to determine how the students felt about reading, their ability to read, what strategies do they use when faced with a challenge and what, if any particular areas would they like to get better at / support with
What does the evidence tell us so far?	Quantitative data: 72% of our students answered they “love or like to read” 98% of our students answered that when they are reading alone, “they can read well or can read” 84% of our students know “how to pick a book that is good for them”; 13% “often pick books that they don’t like or that are too hard” 92% of our students answered that they “always or most of the time” understand what they read 85% of our students read “for pleasure or information”; 7% read because “they have to” 76% of our students answered that they would “like to get better at reading” Our library circulation totaled 21,310 books between September and June. On average, this equates to 71 books per student being signed out (with a two book maximum each week. Qualitative data: Some interesting comments from our survey. Question 11 – Is there anything else you would like us to know about your reading?” I barely read at my house, except for Je Lis It’s not easy to read French books I love graphic novels / I don’t like chapter books When I read out loud it’s harder for me I get confused when I read chapter books I usually read slow to take in all of the information, because I have trouble understanding the first time I read it I am not good at comprehending them I’m below average for reading skills Reading is fun! To what extent are the actions making a difference?	We now have some data generated from the students that we can align with other data sources (eg. RFRA) to help target our support for the 2026-2027 school year
How will we move forward accordingly?	At our September Pro-D, we will take some time to look at this data and develop some in-class, resource and out-of-class supports and opportunities to help support our students.
